Koh Phi Phi, Krabi, Thailand, Asia
Koh Phi Phi is an archipelago located in the Andaman Sea, Krabi Province, Thailand. It comprises six islands, with Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh being the largest.
Visual Characteristics
Koh Phi Phi Don features steep limestone cliffs covered in dense tropical vegetation, rising from turquoise waters. Its coastline is characterized by numerous bays and beaches with fine white sand. Koh Phi Phi Leh is known for its dramatic cliffs, sea caves, and the iconic Maya Bay, a sheltered cove with clear, shallow water.
Location & Access Logistics
The islands are situated approximately 40 kilometers south of the Krabi mainland. Access is primarily via ferry or speedboat from the mainland ports of Krabi (Klong Jilad Pier) and Phuket (Rassada Pier). Travel time from Krabi is about 1.5 to 2 hours by ferry, and from Phuket, it is approximately 2 hours by ferry or 45 minutes by speedboat. There are no roads or cars on the islands; movement is by foot or longtail boat. Limited parking is available at the piers on the mainland.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The islands are composed of sedimentary rocks, primarily limestone, formed millions of years ago. They are part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, established in 1983. The area supports diverse marine life, including coral reefs, fish species, and sea turtles.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include snorkeling and diving in designated areas around Koh Phi Phi Leh, such as Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay. Boat tours to Maya Bay (access may be restricted for conservation) and Viking Cave are common. Hiking to the Phi Phi Viewpoint on Koh Phi Phi Don offers panoramic island views. Kayaking is available along the coastlines.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Koh Phi Phi Don has developed infrastructure, including accommodation, restaurants, and shops. Restrooms are available at public areas and most establishments. Shade is provided by natural vegetation and constructed shelters on beaches. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available in the main village areas of Koh Phi Phi Don. Food vendors and restaurants are concentrated in the main village.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with calm seas and clear skies. The best time of day for photography is generally during the morning (08:00-10:00) and late afternoon (16:00-17:30) to avoid harsh midday sun. High tide is preferable for accessing certain shallow bays and lagoons.
Facts & Legends
The islands were historically inhabited by sea gypsies (Chao Leh) who used them as a base for fishing and trade. The name "Phi Phi" is derived from the Malay word "Pulao Api-Api," meaning "fiery island," referring to the flame-like trees found there. Maya Bay gained international recognition after being featured in the 2000 film "The Beach."
