Koh Rawi, Satun, Thailand, Asia

Koh Rawi is an island located in the Tarutao National Marine Park, within the Satun Province of Thailand.

This island is characterized by its granite rock formations, dense tropical vegetation, and limestone cliffs. The beaches consist of fine white sand, and the surrounding waters are clear with varying shades of blue and green.

Location & Access Logistics

Koh Rawi is situated approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the mainland town of Pak Bara. Access is primarily via ferry or speedboat from Pak Bara Pier. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by ferry and 45 minutes to 1 hour by speedboat. During the high season (November to April), regular boat services operate. During the low season (May to October), services may be reduced or suspended due to weather conditions. There is no direct road access to the island. Parking is available at Pak Bara Pier.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Koh Rawi is part of the Tarutao archipelago, which was formed through geological processes involving tectonic uplift and erosion over millions of years. Ecologically, it is a tropical island ecosystem supporting diverse marine life and terrestrial flora and fauna.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include snorkeling and diving in the coral reefs surrounding the island, particularly at sites like Koh Adang and Koh Hin Ngam. Hiking trails are available, offering access to viewpoints. Swimming and sunbathing on the beaches are also primary activities. Kayaking around the island's coastline is possible.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic facilities are available on Koh Rawi, including a limited number of bungalows and campsites operated by the National Park. Restrooms and basic food stalls are present in designated areas. Cell phone signal can be intermittent, with 4G coverage being unreliable. Shade is provided by natural tree cover and some constructed shelters.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal period for visiting Koh Rawi is during the dry season, from November to April. This period offers calmer seas and clearer visibility for underwater activities. The best time of day for photography is generally early morning or late afternoon when the sun's angle provides softer light. High tide is preferable for swimming and accessing certain beach areas.

Facts & Legends

Koh Rawi and its neighboring islands are part of the ancestral lands of the Urak Lawoi people, an indigenous sea-faring community. A specific tip for visitors is to carry sufficient cash, as ATM facilities are not available on the island, and most vendors operate on a cash-only basis.
