Koh Tarutao is a large island located in the Tarutao National Marine Park, approximately 30 kilometers off the coast of Satun Province, Thailand.
Visual Characteristics
The island features a mountainous interior covered in dense tropical rainforest. Coastlines are characterized by limestone cliffs, sandy beaches, and mangrove forests. The waters surrounding the island are clear, with visibility often exceeding 10 meters. Rock formations are predominantly karst limestone.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Koh Tarutao is via ferry or speedboat from Pak Bara Pier in Satun Province. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by ferry and 45 minutes by speedboat. There is a national park pier on the eastern side of the island. Limited parking is available at Pak Bara Pier. No public transport operates directly on the island; internal transport relies on walking, bicycle rental, or park-provided songthaews.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Koh Tarutao was formed through geological processes involving the uplift and erosion of limestone. Historically, it served as a penal colony from 1937 to 1947. The island is part of the Tarutao National Marine Park, established in 1974, and is classified as a tropical rainforest ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include hiking to viewpoints such as the Tarutao National Park Headquarters viewpoint, exploring the mangrove tunnels by kayak, and visiting the former prison site. Snorkeling is possible in designated areas, particularly around nearby smaller islands accessible by boat tour. Wildlife observation, including birdwatching and primate spotting, is also a primary activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic accommodation, including bungalows and campsites, is available at the national park headquarters. Restrooms and shower facilities are present at the headquarters. Shade is provided by natural tree cover and some designated picnic areas. Cell phone signal (3G/4G) is intermittent and generally only available near the park headquarters. Food vendors are located at the park headquarters, offering a limited selection of Thai dishes.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall and calmer seas. The best time of day for photography is generally early morning or late afternoon due to softer light. High tide is not a critical factor for most activities, but low tide can expose more of the intertidal zones for exploration.
Facts & Legends
A notable historical event occurred in 1941 when escaped prisoners, known as the "Sea Gypsies," formed a pirate fleet and preyed on passing ships. The island's name, Tarutao, is derived from the Malay word "pulau," meaning island, and "tua," meaning old.
