Las Peñas is located at the northern end of the Malecón 2000 boardwalk. It is approximately 2 kilometers north of Guayaquil's city center. Access is primarily on foot via the Malecón 2000 or directly from Calle Numa Pompilio Llona. Limited street parking is available in the vicinity, and public bus lines 6, 8, and 12 stop near the Malecón 2000 entrance.

Las Peñas originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a residential area for affluent families. The houses were constructed using local timber, designed to withstand Guayaquil's tropical climate. The neighborhood was rebuilt after several fires, notably in 1896, with many of the current structures dating from the early 1900s.

Visitors can walk along Calle Numa Pompilio Llona, observing the architectural style. Climbing the 444 steps to the top of Cerro Santa Ana provides panoramic views of the city and the Guayas River. A notable historical fact is that the renowned poet and writer Jorge Luis Borges resided in one of the houses in Las Peñas during his childhood. The neighborhood's resilience is a key characteristic, having been rebuilt multiple times after significant fires.
