Rincon de la Vieja Volcano | Guanacaste

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is an active stratovolcano located in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. It is part of the Guanacaste Volcanic Range.

From Liberia, take Route 1 north, then turn east onto Route 911 towards Hacienda Guachipelin. Parking is available at the national park ranger station. Public transport options are limited; a taxi or private transfer from Liberia is the most direct method.

Local legend attributes the volcano's name, "Rincon de la Vieja" (Old Woman's Corner), to a tale of a powerful shamaness who lived in a cave near the volcano and possessed magical powers. It is said she was responsible for the volcano's eruptions and the creation of the hot springs.
