Visual Characteristics

The garden is characterized by its terraced landscape, featuring cascading waterfalls, ponds, and winding pathways. It contains over 50,000 tropical plants, including bromeliads, orchids, and palms. The site also houses a variety of birds, such as flamingos and parrots, within enclosed habitats.

Public transport options include the PSTA bus line 4, which stops within walking distance of the garden entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site was originally a private residence created by George Williamson in 1935. He began excavating the land to create a garden, lowering the ground level to form the sunken effect. The property was later purchased and developed into a public attraction, officially opening in 1992. It is classified as a cultivated botanical garden.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the garden paths to observe plant species and bird enclosures. Scheduled flamingo parades occur daily. Educational programs and workshops are offered periodically. Photography is permitted throughout the grounds.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and covered structures. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally consistent within the garden. No on-site food vendors are present, but dining options are available in the surrounding commercial district.

Best Time to Visit

The garden is open year-round. Morning hours, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, offer optimal lighting for photography and cooler temperatures. The best months for visiting are typically March through May, when temperatures are moderate and humidity is lower.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature of Sunken Gardens is its collection of ancient fossilized shark teeth, some dating back millions of years, which are integrated into some of the garden's rock formations. These were collected by the original owner.
