The stadium features a large, white, fabric-covered geodesic dome supported by a steel structure. Its exterior is primarily white with minimal ornamentation. The interior seating capacity is approximately 42,735. The playing field is artificial turf.

The stadium offers multiple parking lots surrounding the complex, with paid parking available on event days. Public transportation options include the PSTA Bus Route 9 and the St. Petersburg Trolley, which stops near the stadium.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the stadium began in 1986, and it was originally known as the Florida Suncoast Dome. It was designed by HOK Sport (now Populous) and intended to attract a Major League Baseball expansion team or an NFL team. The stadium officially opened in 1990. It was renamed Tropicana Field in 1998 after Tropicana Products purchased the naming rights.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary activity is attending baseball games for the Tampa Bay Rays. The stadium also hosts concerts, other sporting events, and conventions. Visitors can observe the resident tropical birds, including parrots and finches, that inhabit the stadium's interior aviaries.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available throughout the concourses. Shaded seating is provided by the domed structure. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the stadium. Food and beverage vendors are located on all levels of the concourse.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is during a Tampa Bay Rays game. Game times vary based on the schedule, typically in the afternoon or evening. The stadium's climate-controlled environment makes the weather outside irrelevant to the visitor experience.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature of Tropicana Field is its "Big 3" catwalks that hang from the roof. These catwalks are considered part of the playing field, and balls that hit them can result in a ground rule double. The stadium is also known for its lively atmosphere during Rays games, often amplified by the enclosed space.
