Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy's original purpose was to provide a formal education for midshipmen. The campus has expanded significantly over its history, with many buildings constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site itself is a peninsula formed by the Severn River and College Creek, a natural landform that has been extensively developed.

Visitors can tour the grounds, including the Naval Academy Chapel, the Crypt of John Paul Jones, and the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. Guided walking tours are available, detailing the history and architecture of the campus. Observing the midday formation of midshipmen (during the academic year) is a scheduled event. Access to Bancroft Hall is restricted to guided tours.

Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available across the campus. Food vendors and dining facilities are located within the Visitor Center complex and near the main gates.
