Atlantic City is situated approximately 25 miles southwest of Lander, Wyoming. Access is via Wyoming Highway 131 (also known as South Second Street in Lander), which transitions to a gravel road approximately 10 miles south of town. The gravel portion of the road is maintained but can be rough; high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Parking is informal and available at various points near the remaining structures. No public transport services this location.

Atlantic City was established in 1867 following the discovery of gold. It was a boomtown during the late 19th century, with its population peaking around 1,000 residents. The town declined significantly after the gold veins were depleted and mining operations ceased.
