Founded in 1868 following the discovery of gold in the Sweetwater River region, South Pass City served as a significant supply and administrative center during the Wyoming gold rush. It was incorporated as a town in 1872. The site is located within the South Pass geological region, a low-elevation gap in the Rocky Mountains, historically significant as a passage on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails.

South Pass City was once the county seat of Sweetwater County and briefly served as the territorial capital of Wyoming in 1869. A local legend suggests that the ghost of a prospector named "Old Man Hemlock" still wanders the abandoned mine shafts in the vicinity, searching for his lost claim.
