Wind River Range, Lander, USA Wyoming, North America
The Wind River Range is a mountain range located in western Wyoming, USA. It is a significant sub-range of the Rocky Mountains.
Visual Characteristics
The range features granite peaks, cirques, and alpine lakes. Elevations range from approximately 8,000 feet to over 13,000 feet. Vegetation varies from sagebrush steppe at lower elevations to subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce forests, transitioning to alpine tundra at higher altitudes. Glacial features, including moraines and U-shaped valleys, are prevalent.
Location & Access Logistics
The Wind River Range is situated west of Lander, Wyoming. Access points include the Big Sandy Opening (southwest of Lander, accessible via Fremont County Road 120, a gravel road) and the Elkhart Park Trailhead (west of Lander, accessible via Fremont County Road 107, a paved and then gravel road). These trailheads serve as primary entry points for backcountry exploration. Lander is approximately 2 hours from Casper, Wyoming, via US-26 W and US-287 N.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Wind River Range is primarily composed of Precambrian granite, formed approximately 2.8 billion years ago. The current topography is largely a result of Pleistocene glaciation, which carved out the characteristic cirques, arêtes, and U-shaped valleys. The range is part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is a primary activity, with trails leading to alpine lakes such as Titcomb Basin and Island Lake. Rock climbing opportunities exist on granite formations. Backpacking and wilderness camping are permitted in designated areas. Fishing is available in many of the alpine lakes and streams.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Limited infrastructure exists within the range itself. Trailheads typically have basic parking areas. Restrooms are generally not available at trailheads or within the backcountry. Cell phone signal is absent in most areas. Food vendors are located in Lander and Dubois, the nearest towns.
Best Time to Visit
The primary season for accessing the Wind River Range is from July through September, when snow has typically receded from higher trails. Mid-day offers the most direct sunlight for photography, though early morning and late evening provide softer light. High tide is not applicable to this mountain range.
Facts & Legends
The Cirque of the Towers is a notable glacial cirque within the range, renowned for its dramatic granite walls and accessibility for experienced hikers and climbers. Local Shoshone legends speak of the mountains as a sacred place, with stories of spirits inhabiting the peaks.
