Balanced Rock, Moab, USA Utah, North America
Balanced Rock is a geological formation located in Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah. It consists of a large sandstone boulder perched precariously atop a narrower pedestal.
Visual Characteristics
The formation features a prominent, roughly spherical sandstone boulder measuring approximately 3.5 meters (12 feet) in diameter. This boulder rests on a slender, eroded sandstone pedestal that is approximately 15 meters (50 feet) tall. The sandstone exhibits a reddish-orange hue, characteristic of the Entrada Sandstone formation.
Location & Access Logistics
Balanced Rock is situated within Arches National Park. Access is via the park's main scenic drive, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the park entrance. A paved, accessible loop trail, 0.4 kilometers (0.25 miles) in length, circles the base of the formation. Parking is available at a designated lot adjacent to the trailhead. No public transport operates within the park.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Balanced Rock is a product of differential erosion. The pedestal was formed by the removal of softer rock layers, while the caprock boulder, likely a remnant of a larger sandstone layer, remained. This process occurred over geological timescales, shaped by wind and water.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk the paved loop trail for unobstructed views of Balanced Rock. Photography is a primary activity. No climbing or touching of the formation is permitted.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Balanced Rock trailhead parking area. Shade is minimal around the formation itself, though some shade is present along the loop trail. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in this area of the park. No food vendors are located directly at Balanced Rock; services are available at the park visitor center or in Moab.
