Double Arch is a natural sandstone arch formation located in Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah.

It is characterized by two distinct, large openings that appear to merge at their base.

Visual Characteristics

The formation consists of Entrada Sandstone, exhibiting a warm, reddish-orange hue. The two arches rise approximately 104 feet (32 meters) high and span 148 feet (45 meters) wide. The rock surface displays cross-bedding patterns indicative of ancient sand dunes. The base of the arches is a solid, continuous rock pedestal.

Location & Access Logistics

Double Arch is situated at the end of the paved Arches Scenic Drive, approximately 18 miles (29 km) from the park entrance station. The drive from Moab to the park entrance is via US-191 North. A dedicated parking area is available at the trailhead. No public transport operates within Arches National Park.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Double Arch is a product of natural erosion. Over millennia, water and wind have carved through a fin of Entrada Sandstone. The formation is classified as a natural arch, specifically a double arch, formed by differential weathering and erosion of the sandstone.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the paved, accessible trail to the base of the arches. The trail is approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km) roundtrip. Photography is a primary activity. Climbing on or near the arches is prohibited.

Infrastructure & Amenities

A paved parking lot is present. Restrooms are located near the trailhead. There is no direct shade at the base of the arches. Cell phone signal is intermittent to non-existent within this section of the park.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions, minimizing harsh shadows. The best months for comfortable weather are April, May, September, and October. Summer months (June-August) can experience high temperatures.

Facts & Legends

Double Arch is one of the largest arches in the park by span. The formation was a filming location for the opening scene of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
