Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is a protected area located in the central catchment area of Singapore. It preserves one of the few remaining areas of primary rainforest in the country.

The reserve features dense tropical rainforest with a canopy reaching up to 40 meters. Dominant tree species include Dipterocarps and various species of figs. The terrain is undulating, with the highest point being Bukit Timah Hill at 163.63 meters. The forest floor is covered in leaf litter and undergrowth, with streams and small rivulets present.
Location & Access Logistics
The reserve is situated approximately 12 kilometers from the city center. Access is via Upper Bukit Timah Road. Parking is available at the main visitor center. The nearest MRT station is King Albert Park (Downtown Line), approximately a 15-minute walk from the reserve entrance. Bus services 67, 171, 173, 184, 185, and 852 stop near the reserve.

Established in 1937, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve was created to protect Singapore's remaining primary rainforest from agricultural development. It is classified as a tropical rainforest ecosystem, supporting a high level of biodiversity despite its small size.

Hiking is the primary activity, with several marked trails including the Summit Trail (to the highest point), the Chestnut Nature Trail, and the Forest Boardwalk. Birdwatching and insect observation are common. Visitors can access the exhibition gallery at the visitor center.

The best time for photography is early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) for softer light. The months of February to April generally offer drier weather. Rainfall is common year-round, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
Facts & Legends
Bukit Timah Hill was the site of a significant battle during the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1942. A unique fact is that despite its urban surroundings, the reserve harbors over 500 species of native flora and fauna, including the rare Raffles' banded langur.
