Siloso Point, Western Region, Singapore, Asia
Siloso Point is a coastal area located at the western end of Sentosa Island in Singapore. It is characterized by its rocky shoreline and historical fortifications.
Visual Characteristics
The area features a shoreline composed of weathered granite boulders and concrete structures. Remnants of military emplacements, including gun turrets and bunkers, are visible. Vegetation consists of coastal shrubs and mature trees, providing limited natural shade.
Location & Access Logistics
Siloso Point is situated at the westernmost tip of Sentosa Island. Access is via Sentosa Gateway, then following signs for Fort Siloso and Siloso Point. Parking is available at the Fort Siloso car park, approximately 50 meters from the point. Public transport options include the Sentosa Bus 1, which stops at Fort Siloso, and the Sentosa Express monorail to Beach Station, followed by a 15-minute walk west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Siloso Point was developed as part of Singapore's coastal defense system. Fort Siloso, located adjacent to the point, was constructed in the 1880s to guard the western entrance to the Keppel Harbour. The geological composition of the shoreline is primarily igneous rock, with evidence of coastal erosion shaping the current formations.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the preserved structures of Fort Siloso, including the underground tunnels and artillery displays. Walking trails provide access along the coastline. Photography of the historical fortifications and the sea is possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Fort Siloso visitor center. Limited shade is provided by trees and the historical structures. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are located at the nearby Siloso Beach area, approximately 500 meters east.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun angle is lower, reducing harsh shadows on the fortifications. Weather is generally consistent year-round, but the period from February to April offers lower humidity. Tidal conditions do not significantly impact access to the point itself.
Facts & Legends
During World War II, Fort Siloso was one of the few fortifications in Singapore that did not fall to Japanese forces. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the preserved 6-inch naval guns within the fort, which were operational until the 1950s.
