Visual Characteristics

The park features rolling terrain with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. Several bodies of water, including Cedar Lake and portions of Bassett Creek, are present. The park's landscape includes open grassy areas, wooded sections, and a golf course. Structures within the park, such as the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, are integrated into the natural setting.

Theodore Wirth Park is located at 3701 Theodore Wirth Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55416. It is approximately 5 kilometers west of downtown Minneapolis. Access is primarily via Theodore Wirth Parkway and Cedar Lake Parkway. Ample parking is available at designated lots throughout the park, including near the park office, the lake beaches, and the golf course. Public transport options include Metro Transit bus routes 10 and 66, which have stops along the park's perimeter.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Established in 1926, Theodore Wirth Park was named after the superintendent of Minneapolis Parks from 1889 to 1935. The park was developed on land that was largely undeveloped prairie and woodland. Its creation was part of a larger initiative to preserve green spaces within the growing city. The Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, established in 1907, is the oldest public wildflower garden in the United States, preserving native plant species.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include hiking and biking on paved and unpaved trails, picnicking at designated areas, fishing in Cedar Lake, and swimming at the beach. The park contains a disc golf course and a public golf course. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails. The Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden offers opportunities for botanical observation.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at various locations, including near the park office, beaches, and picnic areas. Shade is provided by mature trees throughout the park. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the park. Food vendors are not permanently stationed within the park, but concessions may be available at the golf course club house or during special events.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions. The best months for outdoor activities are May through October, with peak foliage in September and October. For wildflower viewing, late spring and early summer are ideal. Cedar Lake is typically open for swimming from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Facts & Legends

Theodore Wirth Park is home to the Wirth Park Chalet, a historic building that has served various functions over the years, including as a warming house for winter sports. A specific tip for visitors is to explore the less-trafficked trails in the western sections of the park for a more secluded experience.
