Hunting Island State Park, Beaufort, USA South Carolina, North America

Hunting Island State Park is a protected coastal barrier island located in Beaufort County, South Carolina. It encompasses approximately 9,000 acres of diverse natural habitats.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a 3-mile stretch of undeveloped beach with coarse, light-brown sand. Inland, the landscape transitions to maritime forest characterized by dense stands of live oak, palmetto, and pine trees. The Hunting Island Lighthouse, constructed of brick, stands 132 feet tall and is painted with alternating black and white bands.

Location & Access Logistics

Hunting Island State Park is situated 15 miles southeast of Beaufort, South Carolina. Access is via SC Highway 21 South, which leads directly to the park entrance. A per-vehicle entrance fee is required. Ample parking is available at the lighthouse, beach access points, and campground areas. No public transport directly serves the park; private vehicle is the primary access method.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Hunting Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1889 and deactivated in 1933. It was originally built to guide ships along the Atlantic coast. Ecologically, the island is a dynamic barrier island system, subject to erosion and accretion, supporting a variety of coastal flora and fauna.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can climb the 177 steps to the top of the Hunting Island Lighthouse for panoramic views. Beachcombing and shell collecting are permitted along the shoreline. Birdwatching is a significant activity, with numerous migratory and resident species present. Fishing is allowed from the pier and surf. Kayaking and canoeing are possible in the marsh areas.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the lighthouse, nature center, and campground. Shaded areas are provided by the maritime forest canopy and picnic shelters. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the park. A small park store offers basic supplies and snacks. Food vendors are not present within the park; visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning and late afternoon offer softer light. The best months for weather are typically April through June and September through October, with average temperatures ranging from 60-80°F. High tide is generally preferred for beach access and swimming. Low tide exposes more of the beach for walking and shell collecting.

Facts & Legends

The Hunting Island Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that is open to the public. It was originally located on a different part of the island and was moved inland due to erosion. A local legend speaks of a spectral keeper who still patrols the tower on foggy nights.
