Hwahong Gate was constructed between 1794 and 1796 as part of the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, designed by Jeong Yak-yong under the orders of King Jeongjo. The fortress was built to relocate the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, and to serve as a strategic military base. The gate's design incorporates principles of both Eastern and Western military architecture.
