Seojangdae is a military observation post located within the Hwaseong Fortress walls in Suwon, South Korea.
It served as a strategic command post for the fortress's defense.
Visual Characteristics
Seojangdae is a two-story octagonal structure constructed from granite and wood. The lower level is a stone platform, while the upper level features wooden walls and a tiled roof. The exterior walls are painted in traditional Korean colors, primarily white and red. The structure stands approximately 10 meters high.
Location & Access Logistics
Seojangdae is situated on the western side of Hwaseong Fortress. Access is via the fortress walls. From Suwon Station (KTX, Subway Line 1), take Bus 11 or 720 to the Hwaseong Fortress entrance near Paldalmun Gate. From Paldalmun Gate, it is a 1.5km walk along the western fortress wall. Parking is available at designated lots around Hwaseong Fortress, with the closest being the Paldalmun Parking Lot.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Seojangdae was constructed in 1794 as part of King Jeongjo's Hwaseong Fortress project. It was designed by architect Jeong Yak-yong. Its original purpose was to provide a commanding view of the surrounding landscape for military observation and command during times of conflict.

Visitors can ascend to the upper level for panoramic views of Suwon city and the fortress grounds. Observation of the fortress's defensive architecture is possible from this vantage point. Photography of the structure and its surroundings is permitted.

For photography, the late afternoon offers favorable lighting conditions as the sun sets behind the western wall. The best months for visiting are April to May and September to October, offering mild temperatures and clear skies. No specific tide requirements apply.
