La Mano, Punta del Este, Uruguay, South America

La Mano is a sculpture located on the beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay. It is a series of five fingers emerging from the sand.

Visual Characteristics

The sculpture consists of five concrete and metal fingers, each approximately 10 meters (33 feet) in length. The fingers are colored in a flesh tone and are positioned as if a giant hand is emerging from the sand. The texture of the concrete is rough, and the metal components are visible at the joints.

Location & Access Logistics

La Mano is situated on Brava Beach in Punta del Este, approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of the city center. Access is via Rambla General Artigas. Ample public parking is available along the rambla. Bus line 12 stops within a 50-meter walk of the sculpture.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The sculpture was created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal and completed in 1982. It was originally conceived as part of a larger project for the first International Conference of American Artists. The purpose was to serve as a warning to surfers about the dangers of the strong currents in the area.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can photograph the sculpture from various angles. Walking along Brava Beach is a primary activity. Swimming is possible, but caution is advised due to currents. The sculpture serves as a prominent meeting point.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located in nearby beach kiosks. Shade is limited to natural shade from surrounding dunes and any temporary umbrellas brought by visitors. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong in this area. Food vendors and cafes are present along Rambla General Artigas.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination. The best months for visiting are generally December through February, which constitute Uruguay's summer season, offering warm weather. High tide can partially submerge the lower parts of the sculpture.

Facts & Legends

Locally, the sculpture is often referred to as "Los Dedos" (The Fingers). A lesser-known fact is that a similar sculpture, "La Mano del Desierto" (The Hand of the Desert), exists in the Atacama Desert in Chile, also created by Irarrázabal.
