Plaza del Faro is a public square located at the easternmost point of Punta del Este, Uruguay. It is situated adjacent to the Faro de Punta del Este lighthouse.

Visual Characteristics

The plaza is paved with light-colored stone. It features a central lighthouse constructed of brick and stone, standing approximately 25 meters tall. The surrounding area is landscaped with low-lying vegetation and palm trees. The primary color palette consists of muted earth tones from the paving and lighthouse, contrasted with the green of the foliage.

Location & Access Logistics

Plaza del Faro is located at the intersection of Avenida General José Artigas and Calle de los Arrecifes in Punta del Este. It is approximately 5 kilometers east of the city center. Access is via Avenida General José Artigas. Public parking is available in designated lots adjacent to the plaza, with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles. No public transport lines directly serve the plaza; bus routes terminate at the main Avenida Gorlero, requiring a 15-20 minute walk.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Faro de Punta del Este lighthouse was constructed in 1860 by the engineer Juan Penco. Its original purpose was to guide ships navigating the coastline. The plaza itself was developed as a public space in the mid-20th century to enhance the visitor experience around the historical landmark.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the lighthouse structure. Walking paths allow for exploration of the plaza's perimeter. Photography of the lighthouse and surrounding coastline is a common activity. Observation of marine life, such as sea lions, is possible from the plaza's edge, particularly during calmer sea conditions.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located within the lighthouse complex, accessible during operating hours. Limited shade is provided by scattered palm trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong in this area. No food vendors are permanently stationed within the plaza; however, kiosks and cafes are present along Avenida General José Artigas within a 5-minute walk.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the late afternoon (approximately 16:00-18:00) offers favorable lighting conditions with the sun positioned to illuminate the lighthouse from the west. The months of December through February offer the warmest weather, with average temperatures between 22°C and 28°C. High tide is not a critical factor for access or viewing from the plaza itself.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the lighthouse's light was once powered by whale oil before the advent of electricity. The plaza is also known for its consistent sea breeze, making it a popular spot for kite flying on windy days.
