Turn off onto the unpaved Mkhombo Game Reserve Road, which is clearly signposted. The reserve entrance is located 3 kilometers down this gravel road. Parking is available at the main reception area. No public transport directly serves the reserve entrance; private vehicle or taxi is required.

Mkhombo Game Reserve was established in 1988 through the consolidation of several private landholdings for conservation purposes. Ecologically, it is part of the Mpumalanga Lowveld biome, characterized by its semi-arid climate and diverse flora supporting a range of fauna.

Self-drive game viewing is permitted on designated gravel roads within the reserve. Guided game drives are available daily, departing from the reception area at 06:00 and 16:00. Bird watching is a significant activity, with over 250 recorded species. Hiking is restricted to a single marked trail, the 5km Mkhombo Loop, starting and ending at the reception.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the main reception building. Limited shaded picnic areas are located near the reception. Cell phone signal (4G) is intermittent within the reserve, with better reception near the entrance. No food vendors are present within the reserve; visitors must bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for game viewing is during the dry season, from May to September, when water sources are limited, concentrating wildlife. Early morning (06:00-09:00) and late afternoon (15:00-18:00) offer optimal lighting for photography and increased animal activity. The reserve is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

A notable historical fact is that the Mkhombo Dam, a key feature of the reserve, was constructed in the late 1970s primarily for agricultural irrigation before the land was designated for conservation. Local folklore speaks of a large, elusive leopard said to inhabit the rocky northern ridges, though sightings are exceptionally rare.
