Phnom Nam Lyr Wildlife Sanctuary, Cambodia Province, Cambodia, Asia

Phnom Nam Lyr Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Cambodia Province of Cambodia. It encompasses a significant tract of forest and mountainous terrain.

Visual Characteristics

The sanctuary features dense evergreen forest covering rolling hills and steeper inclines. Elevations range from approximately 200 meters to over 800 meters. Rock outcroppings are present, particularly on higher ground. Small streams and seasonal watercourses traverse the landscape. Vegetation density is high, with a canopy that limits ground-level light penetration in many areas.

Location & Access Logistics

The sanctuary is situated approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital. Access is primarily via National Road 5, then turning onto Provincial Road 127 for approximately 30 kilometers. The final section involves unpaved roads, requiring a 4WD vehicle, especially during the wet season. No public transport directly serves the sanctuary entrance. Parking is informal and unmanaged at designated trailheads.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Phnom Nam Lyr was designated a protected area in 1993 to conserve its biodiversity. Ecologically, it is classified as a tropical monsoon forest ecosystem, supporting a variety of flora and fauna. The terrain is characterized by sandstone and laterite formations, indicative of ancient geological processes.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking is the primary activity, with several marked trails of varying difficulty. Observation of wildlife, including primates and various bird species, is possible. Photography of the forest environment is a common pursuit. Visitors can explore the base of the sanctuary's higher peaks.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic facilities are limited. There are no restrooms or designated shade structures within the sanctuary. Cell phone signal is unreliable and generally absent in most areas. Food vendors are not present within the sanctuary boundaries; provisions must be carried in.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable conditions for hiking due to reduced mud and fewer insects. The early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting for photography. There are no tidal considerations.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the sanctuary is home to spirits that protect the forest. A specific point of interest for some visitors is a small waterfall that flows year-round, located approximately 2 kilometers along the main eastern trail.
