Visual Characteristics
The complex is constructed primarily from sandstone and laterite. It features numerous towers, galleries, and courtyards. The architecture exhibits characteristics of the Bayon style, with some later additions. Vegetation is dense throughout the site, with trees growing amongst the ruins.

Preah Khan Kampong Svay is situated approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap. Access is via National Road 62, then turning onto a local dirt road. The final section of the road can be challenging, especially during the rainy season. There is a designated parking area at the main entrance. Public transport directly to the site is limited; hiring a private vehicle or a tuk-tuk from Siem Reap or Kampong Thom is the most practical method.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Preah Khan Kampong Svay began in the late 12th century under King Jayavarman VII. It served as a royal temple and a center for Buddhist learning. The site is built on laterite bedrock, typical of the region's geology.

Exploration of the central sanctuary and its surrounding enclosures is recommended. Visitors can observe intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and daily life. Walking the perimeter walls provides an overview of the complex's scale. Photography is permitted throughout the site.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available near the entrance. Limited shade is provided by the existing structures and trees. Cell phone signal is intermittent. Food vendors are typically not present at the immediate site; visitors should carry provisions.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions. Early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting for photography, avoiding the midday sun. No specific tide requirements apply.
Facts & Legends
A unique feature of Preah Khan Kampong Svay is the presence of a large stone library building, known as the "Library of the King," which is remarkably well-preserved. Local lore suggests that the complex was once a thriving city with a population of thousands.
