Historical & Ecological Origin

Pilot Butte is a volcanic cinder cone formed by a basaltic eruption approximately 100,000 years ago. It is part of the Newberry Volcano complex. The butte's formation involved the ejection of incandescent cinders and volcanic bombs from a central vent.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking to the summit via the paved road or the unpaved trail is a primary activity. Cycling up the paved road is also permitted. Visitors can observe the geological formation and enjoy expansive views of Bend, the Deschutes River, and the Cascade Mountains. The summit is a designated State Scenic Viewpoint.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the base of the butte. There are no dedicated food vendors on the butte itself, but several are located within a 1km radius in the city. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong at the summit.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is during sunrise or sunset for optimal lighting conditions. The months of May through October offer the most favorable weather for outdoor activities, with minimal snow and ice. The butte is accessible year-round, weather permitting.

Facts & Legends

Pilot Butte was historically used as a landmark by Native American tribes and early settlers traversing the region. A unique tip for visitors is to look for the distinct lava bombs, some quite large, scattered on the slopes, which are remnants of the butte's explosive formation.
