Pilot Butte is a conical mound of volcanic cinders, approximately 400 feet in height above the surrounding terrain. Its slopes are covered in dark gray to black volcanic rock and sparse vegetation, primarily sagebrush and scattered pine trees. The summit area is relatively flat and provides unobstructed 360-degree visibility.
Location & Access Logistics
Pilot Butte is situated in the eastern section of Bend, Oregon. Access is via Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint, with a paved road leading to the summit. The entrance is located off NE Pilot Butte Place. Parking is available at the base and at designated pull-offs along the road to the summit. Public transportation options are limited; the nearest bus stops are several blocks away from the base of the butte.

Pilot Butte is a volcanic cinder cone formed by a basaltic eruption approximately 100,000 years ago. It is part of the Newberry Volcano complex. The butte's formation involved the ejection of incandescent cinders and volcanic bombs from a central vent.

Hiking to the summit via the paved road or the unpaved trail is a primary activity. Cycling up the paved road is also permitted. Visitors can observe the geological formation and enjoy expansive views of Bend, the Deschutes River, and the Cascade Mountains. The summit is a designated State Scenic Viewpoint.

Restrooms are available at the base of the butte. There are no dedicated food vendors on the butte itself, but several are located within a 1km radius in the city. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong at the summit.

The best time of day for photography is during sunrise or sunset for optimal lighting conditions. The months of May through October offer the most favorable weather for outdoor activities, with minimal snow and ice. The butte is accessible year-round, weather permitting.

Pilot Butte was historically used as a landmark by Native American tribes and early settlers traversing the region. A unique tip for visitors is to look for the distinct lava bombs, some quite large, scattered on the slopes, which are remnants of the butte's explosive formation.
