Access to Sparks Lake is via Forest Road 46 (Sparks Lake Road), which branches off the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (State Route 46). The turnoff is approximately 25 miles from Bend. Forest Road 46 is a gravel road, typically maintained from late spring through fall. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and a boat launch area. No public transport services this location.

Sparks Lake is a glacial lake formed by the erosion and deposition of glacial ice. The surrounding mountains are part of the Cascade Range, a volcanic mountain range. The lakebed and surrounding terrain are composed of volcanic rock, primarily basalt.
