Somer’s Bay is situated 8 kilometers west of downtown Kalispell. Access is via State Route 35, turning onto Bay Road. Bay Road is paved for the first 3 kilometers, transitioning to a well-maintained gravel surface for the remaining 2 kilometers to the public access point. Parking is available in a designated gravel lot at the end of Bay Road, with capacity for approximately 30 vehicles. No public transport services operate directly to the bay.

Somer’s Bay is a natural feature formed by glacial erosion during the Pleistocene epoch, a direct result of the Flathead Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. The bay is part of the larger Flathead Lake ecosystem, which is the largest freshwater lake by surface area west of the Mississippi River. The area has historically been utilized for fishing and recreation by indigenous peoples and early settlers.

Local folklore suggests that during exceptionally clear nights, the submerged remnants of an old logging camp can be seen on the bay floor, though this is unverified. A documented fact is that Somer's Bay is a critical spawning ground for kokanee salmon during their fall migration.
