Wild Horse Island State Park is a protected area located within Flathead Lake, near Kalispell, Montana. It is the largest island in Flathead Lake.

The island features a varied topography, including forested areas dominated by Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, open grasslands, and rocky shorelines. Elevations range from the lake level at approximately 2,890 feet to higher points reaching over 3,500 feet. The island's perimeter is irregular, with numerous coves and inlets.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Wild Horse Island State Park is exclusively by boat. The nearest public boat launch is located at Finley Point State Park, approximately 15 miles south of Polson, Montana. From Finley Point, the island is approximately a 3-mile boat trip across Flathead Lake. Private boat rentals are available in Polson and Lakeside. There is no vehicle access to the island.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The island's geological origin is glacial, formed by the retreat of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. Historically, the island was used by Native American tribes for hunting and as a refuge. In the early 20th century, it was privately owned and used for raising horses, which is the origin of its name. It was designated a State Park in 1977.

Activities include hiking on designated trails, wildlife viewing (bighorn sheep, mule deer, bald eagles, and the island's namesake wild horses), fishing in Flathead Lake, and primitive camping at designated sites. Boat-in access for day use and overnight stays is permitted.

Best Time to Visit
The best time for visiting is from late spring through early fall (May to October) when lake conditions are generally calmer and weather is more favorable for outdoor activities. Summer months (July and August) offer the warmest temperatures. Wildlife viewing is often optimal during dawn and dusk.
Facts & Legends
The island is home to a herd of approximately 50-100 wild horses, descendants of animals released on the island in the 1930s. These horses are managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and are a significant draw for visitors. It is illegal to feed or approach the wild horses.
