The original structure was built in 1905 by the philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. The mosque was designed by Polish-Jewish architect Józef Płoszko. It was later reconstructed and expanded in 2009 following extensive renovation work. The site itself is part of the urban landscape of Baku, a city located on the Absheron Peninsula.
