Banteay Srei, Siem Reap, Cambodia, Asia
Banteay Srei is a 10th-century Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva, located in the Siem Reap region of Cambodia.
It is constructed primarily from red sandstone, a material that allows for intricate and detailed carvings. The temple's three central towers are capped with lotus-bud-shaped roofs, and the entire complex is surrounded by a moat and a laterite wall. Its architectural style is characteristic of the Khmer Empire, with a focus on elaborate decorative elements.
Location & Access Logistics
Banteay Srei is situated approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap city center. Access is via National Road 6, then turning onto the local road leading to the temple. The journey by car or tuk-tuk typically takes 45-60 minutes. Parking is available at the temple site. Public transport options directly to Banteay Srei are limited; most visitors arrange private transport or join organized tours from Siem Reap.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Banteay Srei began in 967 CE during the reign of King Jayavarman V. It was commissioned by a Brahmin counselor named Yajnavaraha. The temple's original purpose was to serve as a temple and possibly a crematorium for royal family members. The red sandstone used is quarried locally and is known for its fine grain, which facilitates detailed carving.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can examine the temple's extensive bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, including the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Specific areas of interest include the central sanctuary, the library buildings, and the outer enclosures. Photography is permitted, but flash is discouraged inside the main structures. Walking the perimeter of the temple complex provides a comprehensive view of its layout.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the entrance to the temple complex. Shaded seating areas are provided near the entrance. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors and small shops selling drinks and souvenirs are located outside the temple grounds.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning (between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM) or late afternoon (between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM) is recommended. The dry season, from November to March, offers the most pleasant weather. There are no tide-dependent activities at this inland temple.
Facts & Legends
Banteay Srei is often referred to as the "Citadel of the Women" or "Citadel of Beauty" due to the exquisite quality of its carvings, which are considered among the finest in Khmer art. A local legend suggests that the temple was built by a woman, though historical records attribute its construction to a male Brahmin.
