From the parking area, a 45-minute hike (approximately 2 kilometers) is required to reach the river carvings. This hike involves uneven terrain and inclines.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The carvings at Kbal Spean date primarily from the 11th to 13th centuries, during the Angkorian period. They were created under the patronage of King Suryavarman I and King Udayadityavarman II. The site's purpose was religious, with the carvings depicting Hindu deities and symbols, intended to purify the water flowing to the Angkorian temples.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers lower water levels, making the carvings more visible. The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning to early afternoon, when sunlight penetrates the jungle canopy. The waterfall is most impressive from June to October.
Facts & Legends
The name "Kbal Spean" translates to "Bridge Head." It is believed that the lingams carved into the riverbed were intended to sanctify the water that flowed downstream to irrigate the fields and supply the moats of Angkor.
