Black Dragon Canyon, Green River, USA Utah, North America
Black Dragon Canyon is a geological formation located in Utah, USA, near the city of Green River.
This canyon is characterized by its narrow passages and sandstone walls, exhibiting a dark, almost black coloration due to mineral deposits.
Visual Characteristics
The canyon walls are composed of Navajo Sandstone, displaying a range of earthy tones from tan to deep red, with significant sections appearing black or dark gray from iron oxide staining. The canyon floor is primarily sand and gravel. Vegetation is sparse, consisting mainly of drought-resistant shrubs and small trees clinging to the canyon sides.
Location & Access Logistics
Black Dragon Canyon is situated approximately 25 miles west of Green River, Utah. Access is via Interstate 70, taking Exit 156 (UT-24 West). Turn north onto a dirt road (signed for the San Rafael Swell). Follow this road for approximately 10 miles. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended for the final 2 miles to the trailhead due to sandy and rocky conditions. No public transport services this location.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The canyon is a product of natural erosion, primarily water and wind, acting on the Navajo Sandstone formation over millions of years. The dark coloration is attributed to the oxidation of iron-rich minerals within the rock. The area is part of the larger San Rafael Swell, a significant geological anticline.
Key Highlights & Activities
Exploration of the canyon's main passage is the primary activity. This involves walking and scrambling through narrow sections. Petroglyphs, believed to be created by the Fremont culture, are present on some canyon walls. Photography of the rock formations and petroglyphs is possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no developed facilities within Black Dragon Canyon. No restrooms, shade structures, or food vendors are available. Cell phone signal is unreliable to non-existent within the canyon and surrounding remote areas.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for visitation is during the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) to avoid extreme summer heat and potential winter snow. Mid-morning to early afternoon provides the most direct sunlight for viewing the canyon's colors. Flash floods are a risk during monsoon season (July-August), making it essential to check weather forecasts.
Facts & Legends
The petroglyphs found in Black Dragon Canyon are a significant archaeological feature, with some depicting human-like figures and animal forms. Local lore sometimes attributes the dark staining of the rocks to dragon scales, though geological analysis confirms mineral deposits.
