Crystal Geyser, Green River, USA Utah, North America
Crystal Geyser is an intermittent geyser located near Green River, Utah, USA. It is known for its unusual eruptions of carbon dioxide-rich water.
Visual Characteristics
The geyser site is characterized by a barren, alkaline landscape. The geyser itself is a vent in the ground from which water and gas are expelled. The water, when erupted, can appear milky due to dissolved minerals and gases. Surrounding the vent are mineral deposits, primarily travertine, forming small terraces.
Location & Access Logistics
Crystal Geyser is situated approximately 25 miles (40 km) west of Green River, Utah. Access is via Interstate 70, taking exit 156 for UT-24 West. Continue on UT-24 West for approximately 15 miles. Turn right onto a dirt road marked with a sign for Crystal Geyser. This road is unpaved and can be rough; high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Parking is available at the end of the dirt road. No public transport services this location.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Crystal Geyser is a man-made geyser, created in 1936 when drilling for oil and gas. The drilling operation intersected an underground aquifer saturated with carbon dioxide. The pressure from the gas forces water to the surface, creating eruptions. The surrounding geology consists of Mancos Shale and Green River Formation sedimentary rocks.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of geyser eruptions. Eruptions are unpredictable in timing and duration. Visitors should maintain a safe distance from the vent. Photography of the geyser activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No developed infrastructure is present at the site. There are no restrooms, shade structures, or food vendors. Cell phone signal is unreliable to non-existent in the immediate vicinity.
Best Time to Visit
Eruptions can occur at any time of day or night. The best time for photography is during daylight hours. The surrounding desert climate experiences extreme temperatures; spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most moderate weather conditions. Summer temperatures can exceed 100°F (38°C).
Facts & Legends
The geyser's eruptions are driven by the release of dissolved carbon dioxide gas, which is unusual for geysers, most of which are driven by geothermal heat. The eruptions can be powerful, sending water and gas tens of feet into the air.
