Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, Escalante, USA Utah, North America
Escalante Petrified Forest State Park is a protected area containing fossilized wood located near the city of Escalante in southern Utah, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The park features large, multicolored petrified wood logs, primarily composed of silica. These fossilized logs exhibit a range of colors including red, yellow, brown, and gray, resulting from mineral impurities. The terrain is characterized by exposed rock formations, canyons, and sparse desert vegetation.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is situated approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Escalante, Utah, off State Route 12. Access is via a paved road leading to a parking area. No public transport services the park directly. Parking is available at the trailhead.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The petrified wood dates back to the Late Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago. The trees were buried rapidly by sediment, preventing complete decay and allowing minerals to replace the organic material over geological time. The area is classified as a fossiliferous sedimentary deposit.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking the Petrified Forest Trail (1.5 miles, moderate difficulty) provides access to numerous petrified wood specimens. Visitors can observe fossilized logs and cross-sections. Collecting any petrified wood is prohibited.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the trailhead. Limited shade is present along the trails. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park. No food vendors are located within the park boundaries; services are available in Escalante.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for hiking is during the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) to avoid extreme summer temperatures. Mid-morning or late afternoon offers more favorable lighting for viewing the colors of the petrified wood.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of the park is the presence of fossilized dinosaur bones, though these are less common than the petrified wood. The area is also known for its geological formations that predate the petrified forest itself.
