Zebra Slot Canyon, Escalante, USA Utah, North America

Zebra Slot Canyon is a narrow sandstone canyon located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah, USA.

Its distinctive striped walls are a result of water erosion over millennia.

Visual Characteristics

The canyon walls are composed of Navajo Sandstone, exhibiting undulating, wavy patterns in shades of orange, red, and white. The canyon floor is sandy and uneven. The width of the canyon varies, often narrowing to less than one meter in sections, with heights reaching up to 15 meters. Sunlight penetration is limited in the narrower sections, creating distinct light and shadow contrasts.

Location & Access Logistics

Zebra Slot Canyon is accessed via Hole-in-the-Rock Road, approximately 25 miles south of Escalante, Utah. Turn east onto a signed dirt road (FR 207) and proceed for approximately 1.5 miles to the trailhead parking area. The trailhead is marked. The final approach to the canyon involves walking through a wash. No public transport is available. Parking is limited to a small dirt lot at the trailhead.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Zebra Slot Canyon is a natural geological formation, carved by flash floods and wind erosion through Navajo Sandstone. The sandstone itself was deposited as sand dunes during the Jurassic period. The characteristic "zebra" stripes are formed by differential erosion of the sandstone layers, influenced by variations in mineral content and grain size.

Key Highlights & Activities

Exploration of the canyon by walking. Photography of the striped sandstone formations. Navigating narrow passages. Observing the effects of water erosion.

Infrastructure & Amenities

No restrooms are available at the trailhead. No designated shade structures are present. Cell phone signal is unreliable to non-existent in the canyon and surrounding areas. No food vendors are located at or near the trailhead.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is mid-morning to early afternoon when sunlight penetrates the canyon. The best months for visiting are April through May and September through October, avoiding extreme summer heat and potential winter snow. Flash flood potential is highest during monsoon season (July-September), making it crucial to check weather forecasts before visiting.

Facts & Legends

The canyon's name originates from the distinctive, parallel stripes that resemble the coat of a zebra. Hikers should be aware of flash flood potential; the canyon can fill rapidly with water during rain events, even if rain is not occurring directly overhead.
