Hisarlaka Fortress is a late antique and medieval stronghold located on the highest part of Hisarlaka hill, overlooking the city of Kyustendil.
Visual Characteristics
The site features reconstructed stone walls, bastions, and three preserved gates. The masonry consists of broken stones bonded with mortar, reinforced with brick belts. The fortress has an irregular polygonal shape, adapted to the steep terrain. The surrounding area is dominated by a dense pine forest, a result of early 20th-century reforestation.
Location & Access Logistics
The fortress is situated at the southern end of Kyustendil. It is accessible via a steep paved road suitable for vehicles, leading to a parking area near the entrance. Pedestrians can use a network of forest trails and stairs starting from the city center, which takes approximately 30–40 minutes to climb.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Built at the end of the 4th and beginning of the 5th centuries, the fortress served as the citadel of the Roman city of Pautalia and later the medieval Velbazhd. It remained a strategic military point until the 15th century when it was partially destroyed by Ottoman forces. The hill is a protected park zone, noted for its therapeutic air and diverse flora.
