Koh Rong Light House, Cambodia Province, Cambodia, Asia
The Koh Rong Lighthouse is a navigational aid located on the island of Koh Rong, Cambodia.
This structure serves as a marker for maritime traffic approaching the island's coastline.
Visual Characteristics
The lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete tower, painted white with red horizontal bands. It stands approximately 25 meters (82 feet) in height. The structure features a lantern room at its apex, enclosed by glass panels, and a small attached keeper's quarters at its base.
Location & Access Logistics
The lighthouse is situated on the southeastern tip of Koh Rong island. Access is primarily via boat from Sihanoukville, a journey of approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. From Koh Rong's main pier (Koh Touch village), it is a 4km walk or motorbike taxi ride along the coastal path. There is no direct road access. Parking is not available at the lighthouse itself; visitors typically leave motorbikes at the start of the walking trail.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lighthouse was constructed in the early 2000s by the Cambodian government to improve maritime safety for the growing number of vessels visiting Koh Rong. Its purpose is purely functional, aiding navigation in the waters surrounding the island.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the lighthouse structure from its base. Climbing to the top is not permitted. The surrounding area offers coastal walking opportunities. Observation of the sea and coastline is possible from the vicinity of the lighthouse.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no public restrooms or food vendors at the lighthouse. Shade is minimal, provided only by the structure itself during certain times of the day. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available but can be intermittent.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the late afternoon (approximately 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM) provides favorable lighting conditions. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most stable weather. High tide is not a factor for access.
Facts & Legends
A local anecdote suggests that the lighthouse's construction was expedited due to a series of minor shipping incidents in the area prior to its completion. The light is automated and operates nightly.
