These formations rise between 400 and 1,000 feet (120 to 300 meters) above the valley floor. The landscape is characterized by red-orange sand and sparse desert vegetation, primarily sagebrush and juniper trees.

Monument Valley is situated approximately 24 miles (39 km) west of Mexican Hat, Utah, along U.S. Route 163. The park entrance is directly off U.S. Route 163. Parking is available at the Visitor Center. No public transport directly serves the park; private vehicles are the primary means of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The sandstone formations are the result of millions of years of erosion by wind and water acting upon a thick layer of sedimentary rock. The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. Monument Valley has been inhabited by the Navajo people for centuries and is managed by the Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation Department.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can drive the 17-mile (27 km) Valley Drive, a dirt road loop that passes many of the iconic buttes. Guided tours, offered by Navajo guides, are available for access to restricted areas. Photography is a primary activity, particularly during sunrise and sunset.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The park includes a Visitor Center with restrooms and a gift shop. Limited food services are available at the Visitor Center. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (sunrise) and late afternoon (sunset) provide optimal lighting conditions due to the low angle of the sun. The best months for weather are April through May and September through October, offering moderate temperatures. Summer months (June-August) can experience high temperatures.
