Location & Access Logistics

The Totem Pole is situated within the Valley of the Gods, accessible via a 17-mile unpaved loop road. This road is typically passable for standard vehicles when dry, but can become impassable after rain. The turnoff for the Valley of the Gods road is located off U.S. Route 163, approximately 15 miles west of Mexican Hat. There is no designated parking lot; visitors park along the side of the loop road. No public transport services this area.

The Totem Pole is a natural geological feature formed by differential erosion. Over millions of years, wind and water have sculpted the softer sandstone layers, leaving the harder core exposed as a spire. It is part of the sedimentary rock formations of the Colorado Plateau.

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the spire's color and texture. The best months for visiting are typically April through October, avoiding potential winter snow and ice. The site is accessible year-round, weather permitting.
