Moorea Dolphin Center, Moorea, French Polynesia, Australia

The Moorea Dolphin Center is a marine mammal research and education facility located on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia.

It is situated within the Opunohu Bay, on the northern coast of the island.

Visual Characteristics

The facility comprises several large, saltwater lagoons designed to house dolphins. The lagoons are constructed with reinforced concrete walls and feature natural sand and rock substrates. Surrounding the lagoons are administrative buildings, research labs, and visitor viewing areas constructed with local materials, including wood and thatch roofing, in a style consistent with Polynesian architecture. The water within the lagoons is clear, with a blue-green hue.

Location & Access Logistics

The Moorea Dolphin Center is located approximately 15 kilometers west of the main ferry terminal in Maharepa. Access is via Route 1, the main coastal road encircling the island. Turn north onto the unpaved access road marked for the Dolphin Center. Parking is available on-site in a designated gravel lot. Public transport options are limited; local buses run along Route 1, requiring a walk of approximately 1 kilometer from the nearest stop.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Moorea Dolphin Center was established in 2004. Its primary purpose is to conduct research on dolphin behavior, biology, and conservation, as well as to educate the public about marine mammals. The facility is situated in Opunohu Bay, a natural deep-water bay formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, which provides a protected environment for the marine life.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe bottlenose dolphins in their semi-natural habitat. Scheduled educational presentations detail dolphin behavior and research findings. Interaction programs, such as swimming with dolphins, are available by reservation and are conducted under strict supervision. Observation decks provide unobstructed views of the lagoon activities.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available in the main visitor building. Limited shaded seating is provided in designated viewing areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available on-site. There are no on-site food vendors, but small snack kiosks are located near the ferry terminal in Maharepa.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for observation is generally between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, when dolphin activity is typically highest. The dry season, from May to October, offers the most favorable weather conditions with lower rainfall. High tide is not a critical factor for viewing within the lagoons.

Facts & Legends

A specific research focus at the center involves studying the vocalizations of dolphins to understand their communication patterns. Local Polynesian legends often speak of dolphins as guides and protectors of seafarers, a cultural connection that the center aims to bridge with scientific understanding.
