Temae Beach, Moorea, French Polynesia, Australia
Temae Beach is a public access shoreline located on the northeastern tip of Moorea, French Polynesia.
This coastal area features a long stretch of white sand adjacent to a lagoon with clear, shallow water.
Visual Characteristics
The beach consists of fine, white coral sand. The lagoon water is typically turquoise and calm, with a shallow depth extending several meters from the shore. Beyond the lagoon, the water deepens to a darker blue. The shoreline is fringed by coconut palms and other tropical vegetation. The sand width varies, averaging approximately 20 meters.
Location & Access Logistics
Temae Beach is situated at the northeastern extremity of Moorea, approximately 15 kilometers east of the main town of Maharepa. Access is via Rue de Temae, a paved public road. Parking is available along the roadside and in designated gravel areas near the beach access points. Public transport options are limited; local taxis or rental vehicles are the primary means of access. The ferry terminal from Tahiti is approximately 10 kilometers west of the beach.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Temae Beach is a natural coastal formation, part of the barrier reef system surrounding Moorea. The sand is composed of eroded coral and shell fragments. The lagoon is a protected marine environment, supporting a diverse ecosystem of coral and fish species.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is possible in the shallow lagoon. Snorkeling can be done along the reef edge, particularly during calm conditions. Kayaking and paddleboarding are permitted. The beach is suitable for sunbathing and picnicking. Walking along the shoreline is also an option.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are available at designated access points. Shade is provided by natural tree cover. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. There are no permanent food vendors directly on the beach; however, small kiosks or restaurants may be found in the vicinity along Rue de Temae.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is generally in the morning between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, or in the late afternoon from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, to avoid direct overhead sun. The dry season, from May to October, offers the most consistent weather. High tide is preferable for swimming and water activities due to increased water depth.
Facts & Legends
A notable feature of Temae Beach is its proximity to the Moorea Airport (MOZ). Visitors can observe small aircraft taking off and landing from the shoreline. The beach is also known for its consistent gentle breeze, making it a popular spot during warmer months.
