Mount Tohivea, Moorea, French Polynesia, Australia
Mount Tohivea is a volcanic peak located on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia.
It is the island's highest point, offering panoramic views of the surrounding bays and landscape.
Visual Characteristics
Mount Tohivea is characterized by its steep, verdant slopes covered in dense tropical vegetation. The summit is often obscured by clouds. The rock formations are primarily basaltic, a remnant of its volcanic origin. The vegetation consists of a mix of endemic and introduced plant species, including breadfruit trees, ferns, and hibiscus.
Location & Access Logistics
Mount Tohivea is situated in the interior of Moorea, approximately 8 kilometers southwest of Maharepa village. Access is via the main island road (Route Principale) which encircles Moorea. A rough track, suitable for 4x4 vehicles or experienced hikers, branches off Route Principale near the Opunohu Valley. Public transport does not directly serve the trailhead. Parking is limited and unpaved at the start of the track.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Mount Tohivea is an extinct volcano, part of the Society Islands chain, formed approximately 2.5 million years ago. Its geological classification is a stratovolcano. The ecological environment is a tropical rainforest ecosystem, supporting a variety of flora and fauna adapted to the humid, mountainous terrain.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking to the summit is the primary activity. The trail is challenging, requiring good physical condition. The ascent takes approximately 3-4 hours one way. Observation points along the trail offer views of Opunohu Bay and Cook's Bay. Wildlife observation, particularly of bird species, is possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no facilities at the trailhead or on the mountain itself. Restrooms are not available. Shade is provided by the dense forest canopy during the hike. Cell phone signal is intermittent and unreliable on the trails and at the summit.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for hiking is during the dry season, from May to October, to minimize the risk of slippery conditions. The early morning hours, between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, offer cooler temperatures and clearer views before cloud cover typically forms. There are no tidal considerations.
Facts & Legends
Local legend states that the summit of Mount Tohivea is the dwelling place of a powerful spirit. A specific tip for hikers is to carry at least 2 liters of water per person, as there are no water sources along the trail.
