Other vessels include the destroyer USS Laffey (DD-724) and the submarine USS Clamagore (SS-343). The site also features a collection of static aircraft displayed on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown.

Patriots Point is situated at 40 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. It is approximately 3 miles east of downtown Charleston. Access is via US-17 North (Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge). Ample on-site parking is available for vehicles and buses. Public transport options include the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) bus route 210, which stops at the museum entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The USS Yorktown (CV-10) was commissioned in 1943 and served throughout World War II and the Vietnam War. It was decommissioned in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The USS Laffey (DD-724) is a Fletcher-class destroyer that saw service in World War II, including the D-Day landings. The USS Clamagore (SS-343) is a Gato-class submarine that served in World War II and the Cold War. The museum was established in 1976.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can tour the interior spaces of the USS Yorktown, including the flight deck, hangar bay, and crew quarters. Exploration of the USS Laffey and USS Clamagore is also permitted. The museum displays over two dozen aircraft, including a F-14 Tomcat and a A-4 Skyhawk. Educational programs and special events are conducted periodically.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the museum facilities. Limited shaded areas are present on the flight deck. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not permanently stationed on-site, but concessions may be available during special events. A gift shop is located at the entrance.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography of the vessels is generally mid-morning or late afternoon when the sun angle provides distinct shadows. Weather is most favorable for outdoor exploration from April to June and September to October. High tide is not a factor for access to the vessels.

Facts & Legends

The USS Yorktown is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of sailors who died during its service. Visitors have reported hearing disembodied voices and experiencing unexplained cold spots. The ship earned the nickname "Fighting Lady" for its resilience during combat operations.
