The Presidential Palace in Nanjing, currently the China Modern History Museum, is a sprawling complex of governmental and residential buildings. It is located at No. 292 Changjiang Road in the Xuanwu District of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.
Visual Characteristics
The complex spans 90,000 square meters and features a hybrid of Ming dynasty traditional Chinese architecture and early 20th-century Western neoclassical styles. The Main Gate is a reinforced concrete structure with ionic columns and a heavy pediment, while the interior courtyards utilize grey brick, timber frames, and red-tiled roofs. The Zichao Building is a five-story concrete administrative block characterized by its austere, symmetrical facade and yellow-toned exterior. The West Garden (Xuyuan) contains a "stone boat" (Bujizhou) made of white marble floating in a rectangular pond, alongside traditional wooden pavilions and winding stone-paved paths.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located in central Nanjing, approximately 3km east of the Xinjiekou commercial hub. Access is available via Nanjing Metro Line 2 or Line 3 to Daxinggong Station (Exit 1), followed by a 200-meter walk north. Multiple bus lines including 2, 3, 29, 31, 44, 65, and 95 stop at the Presidential Palace station. No dedicated visitor parking is available on-site; public parking is located at the nearby Nanjing Library or 1912 Leisure District.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site originated in the Ming Dynasty as the Prince of Han’s Mansion (1368–1644). During the Qing Dynasty, it served as the Office of the Viceroy of Liangjiang. In 1853, it became the Palace of the Heavenly King (Tianwang Fu) for the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Following the Xinhai Revolution, Sun Yat-sen was inaugurated here as the Provisional President of the Republic of China on January 1, 1912. The current administrative buildings, including the Zichao Building, were constructed in 1934 under the Nationalist Government.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking through the Central Axis provides access to the Main Lobby and the former Office of the President. The West Area houses the Office of the Provisional President and the Xuyuan Garden. Document viewing is available in the Executive Yuan building in the East Area. Photography is permitted in outdoor courtyards but restricted in specific historical document rooms. Guided audio tours are available at the entrance in multiple languages.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are located near the Main Gate and within the West Garden. Most areas have consistent 5G cell phone signal. A museum gift shop and a small cafe are located near the exit in the East Area. Benches and shaded corridors are distributed throughout the garden sections. The site is partially wheelchair accessible, though some traditional door sills and stone steps in the gardens present obstacles.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for weather are October and November when humidity is low and temperatures range between 15°C and 22°C. For photography, the early morning (09:00) provides the best light for the Main Gate facade. The museum is closed on Mondays (except national holidays). Mid-week visits are recommended to avoid high foot traffic from domestic tour groups.
Facts & Legends
A local legend surrounds the "Forget to Fly" Pavilion (Wangfei Pavilion) in the West Garden; it is said the scenery was so aesthetically balanced that migrating birds would land on its roof and lose the instinct to continue their journey. A verified historical oddity is the secret escape tunnel located beneath the presidential offices, designed for emergency evacuation during the volatile 1930s.
