Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon City, USA Utah, North America
Red Canyon is a geological formation located in Garfield County, Utah, USA, approximately 15 miles west of Bryce Canyon National Park.
Visual Characteristics
The canyon features hoodoos, which are tall, thin spires of rock. The rock color ranges from pale orange to deep red, with intermittent white and gray bands. The formations are composed primarily of Claron Formation limestone and mudstone. Vegetation is sparse, consisting mainly of Ponderosa pines and junipers on the upper rims and slopes.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via Utah State Route 12 (Scenic Byway 12). The canyon is situated directly along this highway. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and a small visitor center area. No public transport services operate directly to Red Canyon.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Red Canyon is a product of erosion. The Claron Formation, dating back to the Eocene epoch, was uplifted and then subjected to weathering and erosion by water and wind over millions of years. This process carved out the distinctive hoodoo formations.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is available on marked trails, including the Red Canyon Trail (1.5 miles roundtrip) and the Thunder Trail (1 mile loop). Photography is a primary activity due to the unique rock formations and coloration. Scenic driving along Utah State Route 12 offers views of the canyon.
Infrastructure & Amenities
A small visitor center is present, offering information and restrooms. Picnic tables are available. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the canyon itself but generally available along the highway. No food vendors are located within Red Canyon.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting conditions for the red rock colors. The best months for weather are May through October, avoiding potential snow and ice in winter. No tide considerations apply.
Facts & Legends
The hoodoos in Red Canyon are geologically similar to those in Bryce Canyon but are generally less numerous and smaller. The area was historically used by Paiute people.
