Visual Characteristics
The overlook faces east, offering views of Bryce Amphitheater. The formations are composed of Navajo Sandstone, exhibiting colors ranging from pale orange to deep red and white. The amphitheater's rim is at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet (2,438 meters).
Location & Access Logistics
Sunrise Point is situated 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Bryce Canyon City along the park's scenic drive. Parking is available at the Sunrise Point parking area, which can accommodate approximately 50 vehicles. During peak season (typically May-September), a free park shuttle operates along the scenic drive, with a stop at Sunrise Point. The closest public transport is the seasonal shuttle service from nearby towns.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The hoodoos at Bryce Canyon are the result of differential erosion. Over millions of years, water and ice have weathered and eroded the sedimentary rock layers, creating the irregular spires and columns. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, a Mormon pioneer who settled in the canyon in the late 19th century.
Key Highlights & Activities
Sunrise Point serves as the trailhead for the Navajo Loop Trail and the Queen's Garden Trail, both of which descend into the amphitheater. Sunrise Point is also a primary location for viewing the sunrise over the hoodoos. Photography is a common activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located adjacent to the parking area. There are no food vendors directly at Sunrise Point, but facilities are available in Bryce Canyon City. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available but can be intermittent within the canyon.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the hour following sunrise offers direct sunlight on the eastern-facing formations. The months of May, June, September, and October generally provide mild weather conditions. Winter visits are possible but may involve snow and ice on trails.
Facts & Legends
The hoodoos are often described as "fairy chimneys." Local Paiute legend states that the hoodoos are ancient people who were turned to stone by the trickster spirit Coyote.
