Shipka Monument, Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, Europe
The Shipka Monument (Liberty Memorial) is a national shrine located at the summit of Shipka Peak (1,326 m) in the Balkan Mountains. It commemorates the defense of the Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), a pivotal series of battles that led to Bulgaria's liberation.
Visual Characteristics
The monument is a 31.5-meter-tall truncated pyramid made of dolomite stone, designed to resemble a medieval Bulgarian fortress. A massive 8-meter-long bronze lion, symbolizing the Bulgarian state, is positioned above the main entrance. The structure is visible from dozens of kilometers away and is reached via a monumental stone staircase of 890 steps.
Location & Access Logistics
The monument is situated on the border between the Stara Zagora and Gabrovo provinces.
Address: Shipka Peak, Shipka National Park-Museum.
Access: Located 28 km from Kazanlak and 22 km from Gabrovo via the I-5 (E85) mountain road.
Arrival: Visitors can climb the full 890 steps from the lower parking area or drive to a closer parking lot near the summit to reduce the ascent.

Historical & Engineering Origin
Built between 1922 and 1934 with nationwide voluntary donations, the monument was designed by architect Atanas Donkov and sculptor Aleksandar Andreev. It stands on the site where Bulgarian volunteers (Opalchentsi) and Russian troops held the strategic pass against a significantly larger Ottoman army. The cornerstone was laid by Tsar Boris III.
