The Stara Zagora Opera was established in 1925 as the first provincial opera company in Bulgaria. The original theater building was destroyed by a fire in 1991. The current facility is the result of a long-term reconstruction project, finally inaugurated in 2005. It occupies a site of high archaeological density, positioned above the northern residential quarters of the Roman city Augusta Trajana.
