Location & Access Logistics
The Old City is centrally located within Chiang Mai. It is approximately 5 kilometers west of Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). Access is via numerous city roads, including Chang Klan Road to the east and Huay Kaew Road to the west. Parking is available in designated lots and on some side streets, though it can be limited. Numerous songthaews (red shared taxis) operate within and around the Old City, and taxis are readily available. Several local bus routes also serve the perimeter.

Chiang Mai Old City was founded in 1296 by King Mangrai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. It was designed with a strategic defensive layout, featuring the moat and walls to protect against invasions. The area is situated on a plain at the base of the Doi Suthep mountain range.
