Elephant Nature Park is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center located north of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

It provides a sanctuary for elephants that have been rescued from abusive situations, offering them a safe environment to live out their lives.

Visual Characteristics

The park spans approximately 250 acres of land, featuring a river, forest, and open fields. Structures include visitor shelters, observation platforms, and elephant enclosures constructed from natural materials like bamboo and wood. The landscape is characterized by dense tropical vegetation and the clear waters of the Mae Taeng River.

Location & Access Logistics

Elephant Nature Park is situated approximately 60 kilometers north of Chiang Mai city center. Access is primarily via the Mae Sa-Mai Road (Highway 107) and then a smaller, unpaved road leading to the park entrance. Private vehicle transport is the most common method. The park offers shuttle services from designated pick-up points in Chiang Mai, typically the Old City area. Public transport directly to the park is not available.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Founded in 1996 by Sangduen "Lek" Chailert, the park's origin is rooted in the rescue of elephants from logging and tourism industries where they faced mistreatment. Ecologically, the area is part of the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests of Southeast Asia, supporting diverse flora and fauna.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include observing elephants in their naturalistic environment, participating in feeding sessions, and assisting with bathing the elephants. Guided educational walks through the park are offered, detailing the elephants' individual stories and the park's conservation efforts. Visitors can also learn about the park's organic farming practices.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The park provides basic visitor facilities including covered seating areas, restrooms, and a dining hall for meals. Shade is available under natural tree cover and constructed shelters. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park grounds. Food vendors are not present within the park; meals are provided as part of the visitor experience.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from November to February, offers the most comfortable weather conditions with lower humidity and moderate temperatures. Mornings generally provide optimal lighting for photography before the midday sun intensifies. The park operates year-round, with no specific tide requirements.

Facts & Legends

A notable aspect of Elephant Nature Park is its commitment to a "no riding" policy, prioritizing the elephants' welfare. The park also actively engages in reforestation projects and advocates for ethical elephant tourism across Thailand.
